L2C2 - It works!!

OK - the l2c2 thing works - and it works fine. Today, IDG put the GNOME binaries that had been created yesterday into the LTSP server, and after some stupid goof ups with GDM (initially, we forgot to allow remote XDMCP logins), we finally got the login screen up and running. After some poking around with Pango (somehow, my init patches had got borked), we got picture perfect rendering, and a really, really responsive system. I even tried running Totem on a terminal, and it worked like a charm (there was some jerkiness when I set the thing to fullscreen video - but hey - what do you expect over a network ??). IDG and SM then had the “brilliant” idea about firing up the music players on two terminals at once - and guess what - it worked perfectly! (though listening to Adnan Sami’s “Tera Chehra” and Indian Ocean’s “Ma Rewa” simultaneously from a single speaker set was somewhat “over the edge” for me).
The only remaining issue seems to be that of input. Somehow, we are having issues with XKB and GNOME 2.6 - so I plan to create two GTK input modules for Taneem’s Probhat layout and the Inscript layout (Bangla) by tomorrow. I looked at the source code of some of the immodules today, and it’s not very difficult to do. That should be good enough for what we are trying to achieve right now.
Bug Squashing
After the bad experience with a borked up libgnome installation - I proposed two patches for GNOME Control Center. This should make things easier for people who have to compile stuff by hand.
Hey SDG please do share how u can play music on 2 terminals or instances… as in my case maybe 2 xmms or (mplayer) or somethin like that!! I tried to check with all the options in the xmms prefs but there aint any for simultaneous sound output!! I thought it needed some tweak with the kernel or somethin!! I’m not that smart, share it with the regular users will ya how excatly u enable this feature?
heh… what happened yesterday was really as simple as opening two instances of totem from two different terminals, logged in as two different users.
I have esd running on the LTSP server and ESD works essentially by handling multiple streams… see http://www.redhat.com/knowledgebase/esd/
It can also be done through alsa sound mix aka dmix. However, i have done it on my workstation not on a server client system. So, our mileage may vary.
Here is in very short what i have done done…
* Asus a78nx deluxe mobo with onboard sound card.
* 2.6.6 kernel
* alsa installed and properly working.
*alsa-oss package that fits for your alsa version.
* Make a ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc (systemwise) like this

mplayer(alsa support compiled):
First do a “mplayer -ao help” and select the alsa output.
My mplayer version is “MPlayer 1.0pre4-3.3.3″
For me its “mplayer -ao alsa1x:default
Better put it in mplayer.conf file “ao = alsa1x:default”
For xmms
My version is 1.2.10
Go to Options > preferences > Audio I/O plugin and select the alsa output
plugin. The go to configure and select “default”.
That’s it. Enjoy playing multiple instances.
